STOP PRESS    01 March 2010

First of all a big change.  Boat hire for the East zone will now be through The Inchnadamph Hotel, Tel 01571 822202 for the season 2010. Back to being a good fishing hotel.
Thanks are due to Mike and Katie at The Alt for persevering with an at times, annoying, interfering, time-consuming chore whilst running a business.  I wish good luck to them in the future and will continue to send visitors to The Alt for great food.
The Cat/Dog (S2) and Bad Na Murrichinn (S3) keep on getting better and better; or are the fishermen more skillful.
Ghlinnein (S8) under-fished.  OK; it’s a 40/50 minute walk, but it’s a lovely scenic walk and the reward is plenty of ½ lb to 14oz, red-spotted, pink-fleshed fish dying for you to eat them.
Bad Nan Aighean.(W4) and Bharaille behind.  Nothing large this time but good sport and the sighting of a monster to rival Nessie on Bharaille if the person reporting can be believed.  Probably 21b at most. But!
Beannach (W5) was well-fished with lots of 4 - l2oz fish coming all day when the weather was suitable.  A 31b 7oz beauty was landed early in April.
Loch An Ruighen (W 14 The Sheilling).  There is a new path, longer than the original way but much easier walking.  It starts at the CCWT car park at Little Assynt OS 15 155252 and goes nearly to the loch.  Novice lady Mrs S caught her best ever fish here, 3 between l4oz and 1lb, Hubby caught naff all.  She fished free as a beginner but will now pay as an expert.  Should I charge Mr S?
Innse Fraioch and Leithir Essaidth (W6 &W7).  Good average fish with one day on Innse Fraioch producing a fish a cast at 1lb to 1 ½ lb on Mayfly.  Given its local reputation a good number of fish around the pound mark came from Leithir Essaidth and a 3lb 3oz beaut was taken in early September. Loch Assynt had plenty ¾ lb to 1lb fish caught and Salmon showed well late on in the season.  A junior club competition was won with a fish just over 6lb.  There are more like that in the loch and they can be caught on fly.  You could resort to a 28Gr Toby like the children.
Awe is Awe (E17).  Great fishing in June to Mayfly in terrific limestone water which is closer than Durness.
Ailsh (E20).  Trout to 2lb with the majority 14oz to 1lb.  Good Sea trout catches late on as usual with some Salmon.
Fionn (SI). Plenty of sport with fish to14oz for those prepared to walk up.  Low water early, hot mid season and wet and windy late on; these things are sent to try us.  Three guys camping at Fionn for a long weekend suffered two thunderstorms, the pyrotechnics were fantastic.  Could not get them to pay extra.
The fit sods that fished the more remote lochs delighted in telling me of the 2-3-4lb trout caught and to make matters worse they showed me photos on their mobiles.  I’m not jealous, honestly.  The Inchnadamph Hotel reported a Gillaroo trout from Loch Mhaolach Coire (E14 The Gillaroo).  Verified from a photo taken and the fish released.  As this species was reported extinct here in Assynt someone needs to go try catch another.
The School and Glen lochs (S4 & S5).  Great fun in the School when the water was up with trout to 2lb and some small Salmon.  The Glen Had fish to 1¼lb all season, good Sea trout to 3½ lb in September and a 2lb 2oz trout at the very end.  Salmon to 5½lb were also taken but as to how many I cannot say.
INFO. For readers of Trout and Salmon magazine.  Re the November 2009 issue, and the article "A walk on the wild side".  There is a NO SPINNING rule on all of the lochs in and around Assynt except on Loch Assynt itself (4 miles of bank). Please do not bring spinning rods.  Thank you.
